Variant Split

The Variant Split feature allows you to separate product variants into individual listings.  

By displaying each variant as its own product, you enhance visibility and improve the shopping experience, especially on collection pages where customers frequently compare options. 

In this post, you’ll learn how to set up the Variant Split feature in the NestScale Product Variants app.

Note: The Variant Split feature is available on the Growth Add-ons and Pro Plan only.

How to Set Up Variant Split 

Step 1: Enable NestScale App Embeds on Store Theme

  1. Go to Online Store > Theme > click Customize button
  2. In the left sidebar, toggle on NestScale Product Variants app embeds 
  3. Click Save button

Step 2: Activate Variant Split 

  1. Open NestScale Product Variants app from your Shopify admin
  2. Navigate to Variant Split section 
  3. Click the Turn on button to activate the feature.

⚠️Note: When Variant Split is turned on, the following features will be automatically disabled:

  • Show swatches on the collection page
  • Quick view

Step 3: Configure the detailed settings

Variant Split feature includes 3 available rules: Global rule, Collection rule, and Product rule. 

Global Rule (Required Setup)

Global rule applies to all products store-wide.

➤ How to Display Variant

This setting decides how ALL variants are split and displayed. 

  • Show all variants: Each variant appears as a separate product.
  • Show based on primary options: Split by specific attributes (e.g., Color, Size).
  • Hide based on primary options: Exclude specific attributes from being split.

➤ Where to Display Variants

This setting decides where split product listings display:  

  • Show on all pages: Display on homepage, collection page, and all-products page.
  • Show only on collection pages: Display only within selected collection pages.
  • Show only on other pages:  Display only in sections like “You may also like,” “Product Recommendations,” etc.

Note: This setting applies globally, regardless of rule priority.

Customize how variant titles are shown. Choose from pre-set formats or create your own.

✅ Don’t forget to click Save after configuring Global Rule.

Collection Rule (Optional Setup)

Collection rule setting ONLY applies to products on the selected collection page(s). 

➤ Choose Collection
  • Click Add collection rule button
  • Select one or more collections

➤ How to Display Variants

Same options as Global Rule:

  • Show all variants
  • Show based on primary options
  • Hide based on primary options
  • Exception: Use this to skip splitting for the selected collection(s)
➤ Variant Title

Customize how variant titles appear within the selected collection(s).

✅ Click Save to apply changes.

Product Rule (Optional Setup)

Product rule ONLY applies to the selected product(s).

➤ Choose Product 

Click the Add product rule button and choose one or more products. Then click Done button to proceed.

➤ How to Display Variants

Same options as Global/Collection Rules:

  • Show all variants
  • Show based on primary options
  • Hide based on primary options
  • Exception: Product remains unsplit.
➤ Variant Title

Define how variant titles should appear for the selected products.

✅ Click Save to apply changes.

The Rule Priority for Variant Split

The rule priority affects how split variants are displayed. 

If a product matches multiple rules, the one with the highest priority will apply.

📌 Note: Where split variants are displayed is controlled only by the Global Rule, regardless of other rules.
